I was just on a bid for a 400 amp service upgrade,what the home owner wanted was an upgrade since there was to sufficent load to warrant it.Then he told me that he was going to first build an addition 1,500 sq ft. and wanted us to wire it also.So far so good.then the zinger he also wanted us to rewire remaining portion of 3,200 sq ft home built in 60,s that was wired in al nm :eek: but he wanted to do that par with out a permit !!!!!! Well no way was my answer.So he says if you don`t do that part you don`t get the rest of the job.Ok so what I answered no permit no work.How does anyone expect to do a service upgrade with a permit and add 1,500 ft and rewire 3,200 ft with no permit at all :confused: Needless to say I drove off shaking my head

Re: Recent bid for upgrade

You did the right thing. I just can't understand the rationale behind this clients' thinking. How much more could that additional permit cost? And wouldn't someone who is paying a contractor all of that money want to have an inspection to ensure that the work was done properly and that he's getting what he paid for? This guy must have had some skeletons in the closets of the old house that he didn't want the building department to see.

Re: Recent bid for upgrade

When the "no permit" topic is raised, I inform the customer that:
a) I/You may be fined by the State/City for knowingly doing work w/o a permit and I may also be brought before the State licensing board and fined and/or have my license suspended;

b) Any work done w/o permits may not be covered by their HO's insurance and certainly not by my Co.'s insurance. In the event of fire or causulty, the entire liabilty is on the HO - not the ins. co.'s who may not pay on the claim.

Item a) is not worth jeopardizing my livelyhood over, and item b) is not worth putting your home in jeopardy over.

So are we done talking about permits?

********
If they cannot see that the permit/inspection process is there to protect both of us(and is not just a money making scam for the City to increase their property taxes) - then "I gotta go...bye"

Re: Recent bid for upgrade

He called back and asked me if I would take on the entire job.Answer sure with all proper permits inspections and of course you must understand that the addition will be a bid price the service up grade will also will be a bid price.What about the rest of the house ,resonse T + M for the rest.well he said there has to be a figure that you can figure out,I responded somewhere between a $1.00 and a few thousand :D
