where in the nec can i find reference to installing receps inside cabinets for a commercial application, if anywhere?

Re: receps inside cabinets?

Nowhere that I know of. Someone may think of something, but I can't.

It is very common to install receptacles in cabinets in residential and commercial installations, so if the NEC is silent on the issue, then it is allowed. :D

Re: receps inside cabinets?

Intermatic sells a twin timer for swimming pools with a 20a maintenace outlet inside the cabinet and it is ul approved so I guess the NEC Is quiet on that issue.
Don't tell the lawyers they will start frothing at the mouth. ;)

Re: receps inside cabinets?

Straps,

Good point. It depends on what type of "cabinets" we are talking about. Article 312 has many rules for electrical "cabinets."

Since the Intermatic timer is a manufactured component it is listed by UL and not covered by the NEC.

I'm assumed Justin was talking about kitchen-type cabinets as he wasn't specific.

Re: receps inside cabinets?

Be mindful 314.20. I occasionally find situations where the receptacle box was mounted flush or slightyly set back into the drywall behind the cabinet, with a hole cut into the back of the cabinet and the device mounted with the ears against the inside surface of the combustible back of the cabinet, leaving a gap of 1/4", 1/2", 1", maybe more between the front edge of the box and the inside surface of the combustible cabinet back. I have considered this to be a violation of 314.20 and/or 314.19. Am I wrong?

eprice,

Yes, it is a violation but can easily be fixed with one of these:

Re: receps inside cabinets?

When my bathroom was remodeled, i had the electrician put an outlet inside one of the floor to ceiling cabinets that flank my sink on both side. I have my electric tootbrush and razor plugged into it.

Re: receps inside cabinets?

Nothing in nec forbids it, if in bathroom it must be gfci and this is not uncommon on upscale homes. Question ,does a receptacle in an appliance garage need gfci since it doesnt serve the kitchen counter top ?

Yes, that is the typical solution for the problem.

Oh no, not that one again!!

I say yes, put the stinkin' GFI in and forget about it.

Re: receps inside cabinets?

Peter it does serve the counter top because that is what the appliances sit on even when there inside of it. :D
But don't forget to add the receptacle next to it as it won't count toward the required receptacles. ;)

Re: receps inside cabinets?

This is commonly done with over the range microwave ovens. The only problem that I can see with regard to receptacles inside cabinets is the so goes the appliances (i.e. appliance garages), hair dryers, curling irons, etc. Although it may not be contrary to the NEC there is a distinct possibility that a heating device be left connected and on while put away and left in the cabinet unattended. More house fires attributed to homeowner errors?

Re: receps inside cabinets?

I love this place! I've never seen these, thank you Peter D. :)

Re: receps inside cabinets?

Ok lets say you have a kit. remodel and the cabinets are not in yet. In an effort to avoid a second trip or bending down inside a cabinet to put a G/D plug in, you put the recptacle in with a handi cover on it and the cabinet guys just cut around the preinstalled recp now about a 1/2" nor so recessed int the cabinet.

Any potential problems or code violations anyone can see.

Re: receps inside cabinets?

What's a handi cover? And what's a G/D plug? Does putting a recept. in a cabinet require conduit or some other means to protect the wire?

Brilliant!

It might cause grumpiness with customers, though. (The handy box wouldn't look as purdy as a recessed installation.)
