I've got an architect who's got a 3/4 inch granite backspash, and he wants to recess mount a receptacle in this.

What kind of box out there exists to facilitate this installation.

This is new construction so I wouldn't think an extension box is what's called for but I don't know.

Anybody??

thanks,

Mike

If it's wired with NM cable I would use an adjustable depth plastic box, they can be set flush with the wall and then adjusted out to the edge of the granite after it's installed. Or I would stick the cables out of the wall and have the stone mason cut out for a plastic gem box. This leaves a much larger margin for error when he's making his cuts.

If the stone is already set, have the mason make the hole, then choose an appropriate old-work box. You don't want to take this on yourself if you're asking about this (no insult intended).

Stamped Verses Welded

Stamped Verses Welded

I'd go with a 5/8" single gang tile ring, at 3/4" depth there not stamp out
most tile rings are welded perpendicular to the plate, one would be 1/8" outside
the set, those requiring a jumbo plate device cover. The code gives use
that 1/8", besides one could always use a fire ring.

I'd bring both to the Job, 5/8" and 3/4" the back side would be rough cut and
any it'd have to be cheked anyway.

Appreciate your inputs. Seems there are a variety of ways to skin this cat.

Larry Fine - no insult taken. I work at a computer terminal and with a pencil. I'm always more than happy for the input from those who work with the tools and make it so.

One question if only to further expose my ignorance. I keep hearing this term "work box". You called it an "old work box". I confess, I have no idea what this is?

There are many styles of boxes, but in general there are two types.

One type to use for new construction where you secure to the structure.

The second type 'old work' is used when the surface itself will support the box be it plaster and lathe, Sheetrock or maybe stone.

I'm with Infinity on this. All it took was once using the new adjustible carlon boxes in granite backsplashes and I am hooked for life. But...... I did get one jerkoff who figured out that if he just screwed the screw clockwise a whole bunch then he didn't need to cut any hole at all now that the box was flush in behind the splash. He just buried it right over. Must have been a drywaller before changing jobs to granite installer.

the problem with an old work box in this app is that the stone will be set with thin-set, and the total thickness of the stone, thinset, and substrate could be almost 2". not sure if all old work boxes have that deep of a grip. also, the old work boxes need clearance for mounting fixture screws, and granite is not too forgiving, so you will need to drill clearance holes in the granite.

edit: i like the grey carlon boxes too, but make sure the mount screw isnt going into the granite, since that will not be easy to adjust.
