Receptacle demand

Mike Holt recently sent out a load calculation article and I had a question about one of the items.

220.14(K) says to take the larger calculation of 180 VA per receptacle yoke or the receptacle outlet load calculated at 1 VA / SF.

In his example, he gives an 18,000 SF building with 160 receptacles. This is 18,000 VA using the calculation of 1 VA / SF.

But then he does 160 VA x 180 VA = 28,800 VA - 10,000 VA + remainder at 50% (9,400 VA) = 19,400 VA, so he uses 19,400 VA.

He takes a receptacle demand on the outlet load when calculated at 180 VA per yoke but no demand is applied when calculating a 1 VA / SF. Was this always the case or is this new because it's based on the 2020 NEC?

28,800 VA is larger than 18,000 VA, so the receptacle load is 28,800 VA per 220.14(K).

You apply the demand factor to the that load.

If the square foot load was larger, then no demand factor would apply. Table 220.44 applies to receptacle loads calculated in accordance with 220.14(H) and 220.14(I).
