A 3HP 480V/3 phase pump has a reversing motor starter in an MCC. Is it possible to add a receptacle for this pump? I've never had a receptacle for a pump that's going off of a starter before. Will it damage the pump's motor?

There are many reasons you may or may not be allowed to have a receptacle. If you are going to have a receptacle you likley will have flexible cord, so start with 400.7 and 400.8 to determine if you can use a flexible cord.

Reversing the pump may not be desired, receptacle or no receptacle.

Why are you reversing a pump?

Maybe he is just using what was available. Nothing says you have to use both contactors in a reversing starter.

As for the receptacle, I personally don't have an issue with it in most cases, although a lot of people do not like using cords for such things.
