Bidding an athletic complex w/ a running track. On either side of the track, they have specified Quazite boxes with receptacles to be mounted to the inner walls of the Quazite box below grade.

I don't see anything in 406 that specifically prohibits this, though I'm looking for anything else in the NEC that wouldn't allow it. I've worked w/ this particular engineer and have really never questioned anything I've seen, but this one has me concerned.

I'm starting an athletic complex job next week, and that project was spec'd with Wiremold outdoor ground box receptacles at each field.

Impressive, and I guess needed if there's no practical way to provide receptacle outlets just above grade. I would not be totally comfortable with the solution, but that's just a personal opinion.

Probably the customer requested it, but didn’t give any details on how. I don’t know of any way a quasite box with a receptacle in it would work. Years ago I went behind a job where the engineer specified a gfi receptacle be mount at the top inside of a drain manhole. It supplied a sump pump in the manhole. Gfi tripped, manhole filled up with water, gfi work no longer! Ordered a pump with a long cord, hard wired it outside the manhole on the wall it fed from, and put it on a gfi breaker. Problem solved!

Yeah, I’ll spend the $20 and install a pedestal receptacle in the garden, thanks tho

I know you’re talking about the wiremold box, but I think the reasoning for wanting a receptacle inside the Quazite box is to reduce a tripping hazard for runners. This is a high school athletic complex expansion. I’ve just never seen that, and I don’t see anything so far prohibiting it. There is a drainage rock specification for the box but I’m still concerned just being unfamiliar.

If a 5" mound on either side of the track wouldn't be a hazard, then the top of the box could be raised up, the receptacle installed sideways at the top, relief holes provided in the sidewalls, and the box surrounded with drainable fill to make the mound.

Cheers, Wayne

I think you might have an argument about installing equipment suitable for the location. An ordinary dry location receptacle should be prohibited directly or indirectly from being installed in a location expected to be submerged regularly.

But if the mechanical or landscape design makes certain that the receptacle won't be submerged, than something suitable for damp locations would be acceptable.

Additionally there are proper waterproof receptacles available, eg https://hubbellcdn.com/catalogpage/Bryant_Catalog_I4_CatPage.pdf

the legrand ground boxes look like a great solution...Upsell?

I just won this project..... by 1%. Wow. So, yeh, I’m going to try and sell them on the Legrand boxes if I can. Now that I know I have it I’m going to at least discuss with the engineer and get his thoughts.
