Receptacle orientation

My four year old boy just put a pizza cutter across the prongs of a receptacle in our house. Thankfully I have a square D panel and not a federal pacific and the breaker tripped instantly! It made wonder if there is actually a code requiring a receptacle to be installed with the ground prong up to prevent an object from laying across the prongs. I have seen this required in spec books on jobs, but is there a code requiring specific orientation of receptacles? Thanks
 
No, there is not code requirement for this in the NEC.

Just as many arguments can be made for ground up as ground down.

This is a Taboo topic. As already stated the NEC is silent on the subject of receptacle orientation and a 10 page discussion on the benefits of one orientation over another is really fruitless.

So with that I am closing this thread.:)
