Receptacles required for counter tops

There is a big kitchen with all its amenities on one side. And then on the other side there is a wall of cabinets and counter tops not close to anything else. Question is there are existing receptacles there but they are not spaced to the 2ft 4ft rule I've always known. Am I required to add receptacles to satisfy the spacing for this area or can i leave it alone.. sections of the code book would help to read if you had one thanks guys!!!

Depends on AHJ and what you are doing. In are area, if we have walls open then yes fix it. If you doing something else in the kitchen and not touching the issue you address then no. That also apply if circuit will need to be fished down wall to correct issue

In my opinion, not every horizontal surface in every kitchen must be considered a kitchen counter-top.

I once had an inspector say I had to add GFCI protection to the receptacles at a built-in desk in a kitchen remodel.

I disagreed and politely challenged him. His boss agreed with me.
