Forgive Bob. In his 9700+ posts he's probably answered this question hundreds of times. The fact is, the NEC does not dictate any preference. As Bob said, it's up to the installer or the guy writing a job spec. Many electricians feel strongly one way or the other, but regardless of someones opinion, it is not an NEC issue.

Yeah, follow Jim's advice. Here in Florida, people like bright yellow, green, and pink! I would show you pictures of the new city hall and police department here in North Port, but its too embarrassing.

Fact is, Bob answered your OP. Also threw in a little humor. Thanks Bob. :)

RECEPTACLES GROUND UP OR DOWN CANT FIND POST.
I think it's been firmly established that the ground must be up on Mondays, Wednesdays, & Fridays and ground down on Tuesdays, Thursdays, & Saturdays.

The trick is to project what day you'll be getting your final inspection on because your inspector will red tag you if you pick the wrong direction for the inspection day and if you don't follow 830.180 and cross reference it with 406.11.

Don't forget that if you fail your final and require a reinspection, every receptacle in the entire house must be rotated 180 degrees regardless of what day the reinspection is done on.

Of course the kitchen counter plugs must be flipped every other one up while the ones in between are down as stated in 406.4(G).

Unless you are in the Chicago area where it is commonly installed on the right in dwelling units.

I only install devices on Sundays...it looks more professional to install them while wearing my "Sunday Best"....also helps me justify the double time I charge.

If you install plugs on Sunday, you have to use this one.

The requirement is found way in the back of Annex G. Most people don't even know it's back there because everybody falls asleep before they get that deep in the code book.

David

PS Good idea about the double time !

there once was a third wire ground
that didn?t know which way was down
Many people were asked
in logic they basked
but it still was a question profound
