Receptalcle Grounding

When replacing a an old "Two Prong" duplex receptacle with a three prong grounded receptacle into a metal four square box(with a mud ring for mounting the receptalce),does a grounding pigtail have to be added between the receptacle and the box even though a "ground" connection is made when the duplex receptacle is screwed to the mud ring that is attached to the box? The metal box is fed with 1\2" EMT all the way from the panel

Re: Receptalcle Grounding

It depends. Check out Section 250.146. A bonding jumper is required for any set back or flush-mounted box. (A) through (D) in that section are the exception; surface mounted boxes, self-grounding receptacles, floor boxes, and isolated receptacles. These exceptions have special requirments as well.

Re: Receptalcle Grounding

It is important to remember that if you have a EGC pulled into a metallic box, it MUST be attached to the box. The jumper between the recept and the box can be deleted if 250.146 is satisfied.

Re: Receptalcle Grounding

There is no "grounding" conductor pulled into the box. They are using the EMT as a ground. It is EMT all the way between the box and the electrical panel.

Re: Receptalcle Grounding

Kriverswaters, you will find your answer in 250.146 as pointed out by Bryan and Necbuff.

The EMT is allowed by 250.118 so that is not a problem.

Note, after whatever you do, be sure to verify (with appropriate meter or test equipment) that you do indeed have an EGC connection on the new receptacle.
