Are all cans in the 8x3 box in the bathroom required to have enclosed lenses? And what about clothes closets? I have noticed a lot of inspectors require this, although i can not find it in the code book. Is it in the NEC or is it just enforced by the AHJ?

The problem is that I have seen too many inspectors pass open trims in clothes closets. Of course , that means many eectricians don't know the code either.

The answer is no. Recessed cans within the shower zone are required to be listed for wet locations (when subject to shower spray) or damp locations (when not subject to shower spray). There is no requirement for the fixture in either environment to have an enclosed lamp. Someone could make a wet location fixture without an enclosed lamp which would be acceptable due to is wet location listing. A covered lamp has no bearing on the requirement in the tub zone.

A wall-mounted luminaire in this zone must be listed for a damp or wet location, depending on the application. Recess incandescent luminaires can be provided with a trim that makes the recess can and trim suitable for a damp or wet location. http://www.ul.com/regulators/ode/0905.pdf

Are most cans rated for wet locations? Or is that a special order item, if so what do they cost. Thanks for all your advice you guys are great!;)

It's the trim that determines the type of location it can be installed...

Ok thanks makes sense now, the wording in the actual codebook led me to believe the actual can must be listed for the application.

This led me to believe there are recess cans listed for these locations, without a gasketed enclosed trim.

That may or may not be true. The fact is that they're not required to be constructed that way by the NEC.
