Someone on Facebook wanted a re messed light added to their ceiling but had no attic to run wires.

Instead of stealing power from switch and cutting all that ceiling and wall drywall to run an nm cable, would it be code compliant to run nm cable outside.the walls and ceiling but cover the cable inside wire molding to surface mounted boxes?

Also what are the rules for wire molding?

I had a similar situation in my own home. I ended up running all of the wiring along the edge of the wall near where it meets the ceiling and then covering it with crown molding.

By wire molding are you referring to something like Wiremold?

I recently did this. Add a Wiremold extension box on the front of the switch box. Then surface mount Wiremold to a surface j-box on the ceiling in a location that will allow you to fish from there to the recessed light (or ceiling fan, etc)

I’ve never run Romex in Wiremold, I just pull THHN, but I guess you could.

I’ve also come up the inside of a wall, out of a switch box, surface mounted a single gang Wiremold box, come out the side of that into the ceiling cavity, and fished the wire over to the ceiling location. That way the only thing exposed is a box at the wall/ceiling intersection. 👍

But what are nec rules and limitations on using wire molding?

You don't see this done much so I was wandering how legal it was and how do you determine conductor fill for plastic wire molding that is half a conduit?

If using as a sleeve for physical protection there sort of isn't any rules. Much like many have always done for EMT sleeve down a masonry wall. Having a box on one end and connections in that box starts to complicate things though.

Just being pedantic…

“Wire molding” is not a thing… you will not find any references to “wire molding” in the NEC.

“Wiremold” is a brand name for what is officially called “surface metallic raceway”, with conditions of use described in Article 386, or “surface nonmetallic raceway” with conditions of use described in Article 388.
