I need to specify recessed fixtures for a Library with a 15 feet ceiling. Any recommendations?

Re: Recessed fixtures - selection help

A 14' ladder? :p

Seriously (hey, it could happen!), this might be best left to a lighting designer. What if they're not happy with the resulting light level, and you've already maxed out on the can wattage?

Re: Recessed fixtures - selection help

If it's an insulated ceiling, then you're stuck with a 65 watt lamp maximum with an IC can. In that case, you may need to add more fixtures.

If it's not an insulated ceiling, then there are many more possibilities.

If you're looking for a particular brand to use, my philosophy is A.B.L.- Anything but Lightolier. I prefer Halo.

Re: Recessed fixtures - selection help

libraries require an evenly distributed lumen level --- this would require a high number of fixtures and a high labor cost. i would recommend flourescent row fixtures that are designed for library use. i have actually been hired to replace recess fixture installations in a library (due to complaints) with flourescent fixtures.

Re: Recessed fixtures - selection help

Linear floresents that aim up are a good choice. find a lihting rep and have them help you. A call to your wholesale house, ask who on inside sales is good with lighting, then ask him/her for a rep. The rep will have more than one line of luminares, they are who the wholesale house orders from.

Disregard my answer if you are talking about a public library or university librbary. For some strange reason I had it in my head that this is a home library.

I agree with the others, indirect linear fluoresents are the #1 choice for libraries.

Re: Recessed fixtures - selection help

Thanks guys

It is a public library and the reading areas will be florescent lights. The library wants recessed lights in the administrative areas. Period.

Someone from the library has seen big diameter (8-10 inches may be) cans with shiny reflectors and insists on such lights. He does not remember where. What a pity.

Oliver, try your salesman at your local big name supply houses. There are lots of brands of commercial style recess light fixtures out there. The supply houses get lots of orders to supply those on commercial jobs, but they don't have that kind of stuff out in the showroom usually.
