Recessed halogen in closet

Take a look at 410.16. I was always under the impression that any type of luminaire that has an exposed bulb cannot be used, irrespective of whether it's halogen or not. But then I read 410.16(2) and it makes no mention any type of enclosure for a surface mounted or recessed fluorescent luninaire. Go figure.

Anyway, any time I've seen a recessed luminaire inside a clothes closet it had a protective lens and didn't throw off enough light. For most young people the amount of light this recessed luminaire throws off may not make that much difference. I always use a surface mounted fluorescent fixture with a wrap-around lens. You'll appreciate it when you have "over 40" eyes.:)

Am I mistaken, or can you install a recessed light in the closet with an incandescent bulb as long as there is a shower trim with it?

Correct. The glass on the trim puts space between the bulb and easily ignitable materials. It also can act as a heat diffuser.

There are even some LED lights that can be installed even in the storage area of the closet- no limitations as long as the fixture is approved for the purpose.
