I was in one of the supply houses yesterday, but in a hurry. One of the guys mentioned that is was one of the vendors showing off some recessed LED lighting. Has any of you put these up? If so, what's your thought of the quality of the light from these. I have an LED flashlight, but feel it's not the same quality of light in both color and intensity. I know they have been replacing lamps in cars with LEDs and I keep hearing it will eventually be king when it comes to home lighting. I have installed the Exit lights that use LED lights, and after thinking about it, haven't had one callback to say they're not working. I think part of their appeal is they are pretty robust and have a long life. But obviously with LEDs in car lighting and in Exit signs, one is not really focued on the quality of the light. With either, you're not trying to read or cook using their output.

sorry can't help with the recessed but want to point out that car lights are pretty important.

I don't think I said they weren't. I was intending to say that you don't depend on the particular color of the light to do things like read and work under them. And I also mentioned that the LED lights are more robust. I had two of those pricey lamps go out in my wife's car when it wasn't even 1.5 years old.

There are some pretty good but expensive LED's out there Cree ,out of NC, is big into LED's. Very expensive and I hear the light quality and lumens is very good. I know there are many manufacturers making them for their cans.

Check out Halo, they have a new line of recessed Led lighting.
Not as inexpensive as incandescent but probably worth it in the long run.
Give it a couple of years and the cost will likely drop significantly.

We have done a number of low volt 4" cans with LED MR-16's. Not as bright but a softer light. I believe a lot has to do with who made the LED bulb as there are a lot of companies listing them. I don't know who made the ones we use. I do remember the bulbs did not have the heat sink around the outside. I question if using a 12v can with a magnetic transformer is the best way to go. As far as material cost, possable failure of the transformer, and efficency. On the positive side a standard 12v MR-16 can be installed at a later date if desired.

Besides the reduction in watts from 50 to 4, the reduced heat, they have a much greater life advertised. That's important if they are on 24/7. I was not involved personaly but I know we chanded 1,000's of lamps to LED's a few months ago. The customer is already complaining about failures, but I don't know the percentages.

Lamps or transformers, do you know? I'm curious about this myself.

We got CSL 50w magnetic transformer cans. Not saying I recomend them, just that is what we were supplied. I believe the bulbs were 4 watts but I don't know the lamp manufacture off my head.

yeah, the halo product... it's a direct retrofit for any 6" incandescent housing.

dimmable, about $105 each with trims (must use specific trims, and they
are about $20 each.) i've put in 40 of them so far, as a test for a customer,
and they love them.

i figure in 2 years, they will be $30 each... as soon as some more competition
arrives.

they getcha LEED points too, i believe. better than CFL, as there is no lamps
to dispose of. 3 year warranty, 50,000+ hr. life.... so they say....:D YMMV

supposed to have 5" and 4" cartridges out shortly......

I just finished installing 31 of the Cree in a church choir room. So far I am impressed with them as far as light quality goes. Previously there were twelve four tube drop ins up and the light is comparable but without the glare. Everyone seems to think that they fill the room with light better. I think it is just because the light is cleaner. We spaced them at five feet apart in rows four feet apart and got real good coverage even in the corners.
I have not had a chance to run an amp draw on the circuit yet but I will when I finish the trim. I did notice today when I was in the attic that the can housing was warm but no where near as hot as with the R-30's in the other room.
