I have a customer with some recessed lights that have defective sockets and thermo-protectors. The cans are Marco X-7. They are new construction cans. To my knowledge the can is no longer available. This can has the thermo-protector at the junction box. Because the can is no longer available, is my only legal and safe option to remove the cans and replace them with a new ones? Thanks.

IMO, the only compliant option is to change out the can. Now in a can , like halo. which has its thermal protector built in the can , you may be able to use the old frame and insert the new can. Obviously if they are accessible from above I would just change them out.

Interesting that the cans went bad. I don't believe I have seen more than one or 2 cans that got defected in 35+ years of wiring.

Thanks iwire. The second ref. you gave is an entirely different company. The receptionist said she gets calls all the time about products for the other Marco Lighting. Thanks for the web link. They have some surplus cans.

I just talked to a lighting company that said that if I brought them the socket, they could replace it. They also said that they had replacement thermo-protectors like the ones on the Marco can junction box. Is there any reason this would be an improper repair?
