For recessed incandescent lighting fixtures to be code compliant in a clothes closet are they required to have a lens.
Thank You

Section 410.8 covers this requirement.

Part (B)(1) for types permitted states "A surface-mounted or recessed incandescent luminaire with a COMPLETELY ENCLOSED lamp."

Part (C) for types not permitted states "Incandescent luminaires with open or partially enclosed lamps....."

So, I believe the answer to your question is yes, you must use a lens or other means to completely enclose the lamp. :)

It must have a lense... shower trims are used but the draw back is they are rated to use a 40 watt bulb .You might as well have a night light instead :D

Just a suggestion.....if you haven't already installed the hi-hat fixture, if it's a small closet you can use a small "under-cabinet" fluorescent fixture and keep it close to the wall on the door side. If it's a walk-in closet you can use a 4' fluorescent fixture with an electronic ballast. In each case the fixture should have a wrap around lens.

A.wayne is right on the money with his description. You're not going to get much light with a 40 watt bulb and a shower trim.

A flourescent fixture does not need to be inclosed , if it is 6" from the storage area. I use the electronic ballasts, they give a good light. Recess incandescents leave a lot to be desired.

The fairly new incandescent type fluorescent lamps seem to be pretty good and would work for this type of installation. They average around 10 to 20 watts but put out equivalent to 60 to 75 watts from an incandescent.

Not to mention the fact that they have a five year life guarantee! :)

Flourescents are the way to go in a closet, requiring only 6 in clearance in most senarios this works out for the best.........
Most of our builders supply there own fixtures, our largest builder uses thomas fixtures
and they have a 2 ft.2 light strip with a bubble type cover. These are garbage at least 1/2 wont operate properly, trouble starting up.....When the rep was called he actually turned and said that these fixtures need 24 to 72 hours to warm up enough for the ballast to operate properly :D

Re: recessed lights in a clothes closet

 Isn't it amazing what some reps and/or sellers want you to believe ???

I'm currently installing light fixtures for a customer who spent $ 11,000.00 on light fixtures at a lighting store in lower Manhattan. None of the fixtures arrived on the job in "factory packed" boxes. All were shipped in boxes with mylar tape, duct tape, stretch wrap, etc. Some fixtures were bent, missing parts and/or damaged. I advised the customer that if they thought they purchased new fixtures they were actually shipped fixtures that were on display (which is OK as long as you know it up front).

When they questioned the seller their response was " These fixtures arrive packed in crates and we don't have enough room in our warehouse to store them, so we remove them from the packaging and hang them".

It's a good thing I had my flood boots in the truck because it started getting a little deep !!!!!!!!!!
