Recessed Lights

On a remodel job in the past if I had to install 4 inch recessed lights where the attic is covered with insulation I would always use new construction type recess can (doing all the wiring inside the attic), since there are no IC type 4 inch remodel type recessed cans that I know of. I have a job where I need to install 35 of them and I am kind of leaning towards using the non IC type remodel can and clear the insulation 3 inches away since there are so many of them. I would like to get your guys opinion on how you would do it.

Thanks,
Jason.

There are 4" IC-rated cans. The have a box built around the can

Not for remodeling. The OP is talking about retro fit 4" IC cans.

I would talk the HO into the 6" cans because they have them as retros and IC

If there is an attic why use retro cans. I always use standard cans if there is an attic. I pull up the plywood if I have to. A PITA but a better job.

It is a pretty tight attic space that is why I was leaning towards remodels I have not decided yet how about to do it. I am just trying to get your guys opinion.

I always give them the option through pricing. If you let them know what a great price reduction it would be to use larger IC cans they will go for it or pay you alot more $ either way you win.

Around here I'm sure you would be violating energy codes, you can't just remove installation... I'm quite sure they didn't install it for fun...;)

 Hey, I remove bad installations all the time. But you were talking about something else weren't you.:D

Cutting all of those holes in a ceiling would likely violate a building energy code. Although they may be code compliant according to the NEC they probably are not compliant with the building code.

As someone else already said, here in CA the cans must be both IC and AT cans, be high efficacy or on a dimmer, though your profile doesn't say where you're from.

I think it's asking for trouble to ever install non-ic rated cans in an insulated space. A fire isn't worth the gamble.

Customers don't always get what they want to pay for.

I really don't think there is much of a fire risk in modern recessed lights even if covered in insulation when they should not be. The thermal cutout should eliminate that risk.
