Can someone make a recommendation of a portable generator (Thinking it may need an inverter type)that will work to start a gas furnace--having a 3/4 HP fan blower?? Also, has anyone seen a portable generator with a 50A 240v receptacle.

I have a Generac 15KW generator that has a 240V 50A receptacle (along with two 30A's amd 4 5-20R's). Hard to call it portable -- it is on wheels, but weighs 400 lbs. Only thing weird with it was some of my X-10 lights would flicker and could not be turned on. Either pulsing or off was all I could do with the switchlink brand of X-10 switches.

I'm not sure how small you can go to start a 3/4 HP motor. I'd look at something 5KW or larger. I think the key feature to look for is if you intend to connect this to a house and have a transfer switch that doesn't switch the neutral.

In that case, look for a floating neutral generator. Some are difficult to unbond. Some have a switch to bond/unbond. If I want mine bonded, it could be bond by installing a "bonding plug" which jumpers the neutral and ground at a receptacle.

My 5KW/7KW "starting" gas generator runs the oil furnace, well pump, refrigerator, coffee maker, reef tank, and assorted lights - "all at the same time". It has an L14-30 receptacle (30A). Do you need 50A for the 3/4 HP blower, or for something else? Isn't 3/4 HP something around 10A @ 120v?
