I would like to be an Electrical Inspector. What would be the recommended first step in becoming an Electrical Inspector? I emailed IAEI and ICC and they recommend I take the Residential Inspectors Exam to obtain the Residential Electrician Certification. I was told that for every three Electrical Inspectors for a city there are six on the list. Would this be a fulal attempt? Any information would be appreciated.

Talk to the AHJ in the area you are interested in,they could be ready to move on or retire, sometime a little politicing can go a long way.Good luck to you.

In Colorado an elec insp is required to have a journeyman license at the least so you can inspect commercial jobs as well. So I would suggest you take the res. & com. tests. I applied for every inspectors position that became available for 6 years before I finally got hired. Hang in there. Tenacity wiil pay off :)

I am moving this to the position that I believe the poster had intended.

Re: Recommended

Certification is the name of the game. When my city posts job openings, we typically include a phrase to effect of "those not holding applicible certifications need not apply".

Benaround, Ryan-618, Rcarrol, and CharlieB thank you for the positive feedback. It's definitely on my immediate agenda to be certified Electrical Inspector. I will stay at it. Thank you.
