Recycle or Re-Sell

I am trying to get pricing together on a job and one of the line items says to recycle or re-sell 410 metal halide lamps. Does the term "lamp" mean the whole fixture, the bulb only, bulb and ballast??? I haven't been able to open anything up yet so I don't know much about the fixtures themselves. Has anyone ever done something like this? Should I just get a recycling company to take them away (they will take them off-site) or do I load them up and try to sell them? I should have more info about the actual fixtures Monday. Any input is greatly appreciated.

i had a job to replace the parking lot fixtures in a college parking area--400 watt sodium -- i recycled them -- i told their maintinance crew they could have all the fixtures if they were there when we lowered them to the ground. not only were they there--but they had the security staff rope off all the areas around every pole. they made a deal with a scrap dealer and he had a dumpster on the campus. it worked out great for everyone!!!!!!!!!!

I'd say it is the lamp (bulb) only. And that somewhere in your spec's you will be responsible for disposing of the fixtures. If they are cast aluminum you may be able to get some money for the material at a recycle yard.

If these people were really green - they wouldn't be having you take out good lamps and fixtures just to put in new lamps and fixtures would they. But hey, if it makes them feel any better charge them storage or store on-site until you can sell them on e-bay - just don't get stuck with the shipping costs.... And mark up the time you feel it will take to do so....

Anyway be prepared for more of this type of trash management down the line as over-zealous eco-facists get into project specifing with the guise that they are doing something for the evironment by making you handle their toxic waste as opposed to taking it to the dump. (where it will eventually end up anyway.) This type of thing is also becoming the law of the land in some places....

I say have some fun with it and install used lamps to replace them - and charge a premium for them.

Lamps light up, Bulbs ya plant in the ground.

Be very careful about taking ownership of someones lamps or ballasts. You could find yourself paying someone to dispose of them.
I dont think you can just "throw out" that many.

I work in a industrial plant and we have a large volume of lamps and tubes, all of our lamps are seperated ie: MH, Sodium, Mercury, and even our flourescent tubes. They are considered hazardous waste and a vender picks them up.(very costly) Just a thought to keep in mind.
