I was looking for the raintight EMT connectors from Bridgeport, and ran across THIS.

It says they make red EMT to go with these? Has anybody used it or these fittings? Is it just painted on or is it a sturdier treatment? Does anybody require red pipe for fire alarm/emergency installations? The one's I've seen just use red covers on the boxes.
Thanks

Re: Red EMT?

although I have RARELY seen it, hospitals sometimes spec red emt, fittings and boxes for fire alarm in patient care areas and the O.R. beacuse of the many systems in the wall. as far as rain tight; steel compresson will do the job
craig

Re: Red EMT?

Steel compression fittings will NOT just do the job. The fitting must be listed raintight. Bridgeport is the only company that has listed raintight fittings.

Re: Red EMT?

Many take 760.10 to mean red junction box covers.
In a critical/congested building, many times it is required by specification/contract (not code) to make the conduit/piping systems identifiable. Red for fire alarm, blue for security, yellow for telco, lavender for chilled water piping, you get the picture. BTW I made up the lavender to bust on the mechanical guys. :)
Sometimes it is easier to buy red EMT rather than perform some of the acrobatics needed to identify the pipe later.

technically your are correct, practical wise
Compression is compression... very few mechanics can tell you the brand just by looking at one let alone the inspector

Re: Red EMT?

We have had some FDs ask for red EMT, we have never given it to them, we paint all the couplings, connectors, boxes and covers red.

That has always satisfied them. :)

Then it must be a good idea to do.

It must pose one sort of problem or another or the listing requirements would not have been changed.
