redirecting existing Romex

Greetings all,

I had to reframe a restroom in a coffee shop to meet updated handicap codes and it needs to be rewired (light/exhaust fan/GFI). it was originally wired with romex fed from a metal junction box in a drop ceiling near the old bathroom location. My question is this, can the circuits be rewired using armored cable connecting to that same existing romex-fed metal junction box or do i need to run it all the way back to the panel? (with the armored cable)

thanks,
mike

The way I normally handle situations like that one is to set a 4-square over top of the romex where it comes out of the partition wall, then run MC from that 4-square to the equipment/fan/light, etc. This way, there's no exposed romex above the suspended ceiling.

In your case, if that feed comes from a junction box, I'd just tear out the romex back to that junction box and run the new MC for the reframed bathroom. Can't make everything brand new.

The third option is to call the inspector out to put his eyes on it. In your case I couldn't really justify doing that for such a small thing such as this is.

You may want to call the inspector and see if he will allow this seeing that the box is existing and you are going with metal cable out of the box. He may want it cut back as far as you can with in reason.
