Email from a vendor supplying 45kva transformers to our CNC company, reports the following, ...." I have quoted the aluminum transformer to you because the copper wound does not meet NEC 2017 requirements..." Sorry I have a problem with this.....I find NO reference to this in the NEC seems HE has his "guidelines mixed up???? Please help.

Transformer 2017 NEC

Transformer 2017 NEC

To my limited knowledge NO, however I still believe the sales tech, was blowing smoke. It just makes NO COMMON SENSE to me at all. to my understanding the NEC's scope is NOT to force energy compliance but to insure safe installation.

Is the 2017 even adopted anywhere yet?

Maybe a standard existing stock design but a good transformer design engineer using the available design software could certainly design a transformer to do so. Ko I am certain that the ones that I had acçess to we're more than capable.

Ask him which requirement copper-wound doesn't meet, with NEC article numbers. He'll probably either send citations to other codes (check them) or say "it's complicated and I don't understand all of it", which is where I stop dealing with him and ask for the person that actually knows the stuff :D.

Bingo! It is the dumbing down jpg the support staff, those so called knowledge bases where the support staff types in your question and an answer pops up. There is no need to think.

Simple reply to the email that you will be looking for a different supplier for your transformers if they can't meet your needs will help. Efficiency standards might change, I have a hard time believing that you can improve the efficiency with aluminum but can't with copper. Can believe there may be compromises that must be made with both materials though.
