we are using the 2014 nec, my question is if he refrigerator is more than 6' from sink, does it have to still be on a AFCI protection?

Sink doesn't change anything. Unless it is in the bathroom, garage outdoors or unfinished basement, yes. Though those locations do require GFCI.
