Is this legal/safe?

In a residential bedroom with an existing overhead light and 2c feeding it, can I install a fan rated box and add a hot feed for the fan? Switch will control the light, hot will feed the fan controlled by the pull chain. I know I would need to ensure both sources are fed from the same circuit.

Welcome!

Unless in conduit. running an additional hot (ungrounded) is a violation of 300.3(B). Make the circuit permanently hot (not switched) and use a wireless remote for all functions, or fish in a 3 wire.

Redo existing switch to switch loop, cap off existing hot feed at switch, feed at fan box with your added hot

(I'm assuming he's running cable with "hot" and "neutral" to fan box)

The OP said he would use the same circuit to achieve what he wanted to to. There is no violation there.
