I am installing a new meter socket with disconnect. Do I have to change the panel inside to a main lug panel? I dont see anything wrong leaving the same panel and just separate the groungs and neutrals. Is there a code violation having the two main disconnects?

Re: Relocating a service

The new main will be the service disconnect. It is permissible to have a second disconnect at the existing panel.

Re: Relocating a service

infinity thanks for your help. Now,Is this permissible because it is an existing panel? Can I have this situation in a new construction?

Re: Relocating a service

Just make sure to look for marking on the panelboard that states, "suitable only for use as service equipment". This means the neutral bar is factory bonded to the enclosure and making it a "sub-panel" is not optional. Otherwise, it will just state, "suitable for use as service equipment". In that case, it is permitted to be used as a feeder panel.
