I am having a ,I know I read it but can't rember where, moment. When a house is remodeled and you have access to untouched areas, through walls or attics, without needing to repair anything to do it, is it not required to add hard wired smoke detectors in untouched bedrooms? Or is this one of those good trade practice items?

Building code and sometimes home owner's insurance requirement. Good trade practice and good karma practice also.

Thank you, having 7 separate volumes of our state code (and some electrical requirements are in building code not the electrical code) it can get get voluminous.

Building code, ICC R314.4(ex.2) 2009

In NC you must install a smoke in every bedroom and a carbon/smoke in every hall adjacent to sleeping areas. These can be battery units if there is no work being done in those rooms.

In NC it has to do with building permits. If a builder gets a permit to build a deck then smokes must be added, however if I get a permit and no building permit is required then I do not have to add the smokes.
