I went to look at a job today for the install of an inground pool. Customer has a 100A sub panel located in a garage and will have the pool equip about 20 ft away in a small pool house. Open the panel and find 3 wire installation, L1 L2 and a grounded(neutral ) 120/240V 1 phase. First words he says to me as we talk about the existing install is my buddy who's an electrical contractor told me that there just needs to be 2 grounds driven there and it's good to go. I realize there is an exception to an already existing install that says if there is no EGC present the neutral can be used for grounding equip, frames , etc. I'm unable to talk to the AHJ in this area to get his take on it. Customer is adament about not spending money to upgrade to a 4 wire system, but I have a feeling that the AHJ is not going to be comfortable with the existing set up. Thoughts on how to handle a situation like this? I'm of the mind set that an insulated EGC should be part of the system if a pool is part of the load being served. Thanks for any opinions. Not a simple fix, half of the feeder from the main panel is a 3 wire SE type cable running through the basement to a j box and then transition to CU in PVC U/G to the out building.
