I have a customer who is requesting that I remote the control panel of a industrial machine to another room. Is a main disconnect required both at the machine and the control panel? Currently the machine has disconnects for motors but not a large heating oven.
Thank you. Bill

Hooked up a carbide plow in a hazardous location one time in a plant and the engineer had us do just that.

Control cabinet was outside the hazardous area, took power from the bussway in the the non-hazardous location to an explosion proof main disconnect located at the plow, back out to the line side of the disconnect on the control cabinet outside, then back in with the motor leads to the motor disconnects located on the plow inside.

Is there any requirement at all to disconnect an industrial oven? I guess it could be considered an appliance.

422.31 (B) Appliances Rated over 300 Volt-Amperes. For permanently
connected appliances rated over 300 voltamperes,
the branch-circuit switch or circuit breaker shall
be permitted to serve as the disconnecting means where the
switch or circuit breaker is within sight from the appliance
or is capable of being locked in the open position. The
provision for locking or adding a lock to the disconnecting
means shall be installed on or at the switch or circuit
breaker used as the disconnecting means and shall remain
in place with or without the lock installed.

When I read 430.102 it states a disconnect needs to be in sight of the controller. So generally I have a disconnect in the main panel and I meet the requirement. The machine is 50 feet away on the other side of the wall. There I have disconnects at each motor and I meet the requirement.
My concern is I need a disconnect for the entire machine within view? I can't find any rule stating I need a disconnect for the rest of the machine within view. The rest of the machine is mostly an oven. So I have disconnect on the machine for the motors but the main for the entire control panel is located in another room.
Hmm confusing.

Ok so using both rules I require a main disconnect on the panel and an additional disconnect within view of the machine.
Thank you,
Bill

Read carefully what it actually says. You can use the branch circuit protection if it can be padlocked open whether you can see it or not

Motors yes machine no

Motors yes machine no

From what you describe I don't see a need for a main disconnect in the area, just at the control cabinet. Quite common to have mains outside of room in MCC centers with PLC controlled equipment.
