To replace an existing ceiling fixture hanging from a pressurized gas pipe hickey, it would be required to:

use an approved box
abandon the old wiring
pull a new circuit w/grnd
install an afci cb
recommend to depressurize and cut out old gas pipe

is this not a hardship?
I can remove the fixture, rebuild it and hang it back on the hickey.
but then it's my liability.

I we put the question of the gas pipe aside, for clarity,
replacing k&t lighting fixtures requires
use an approved box
abandon the old wiring
pull a new circuit w/grnd
install an afci cb

under what circumstances could the existing wiring be preserved?
only if the existing fixture is rebuit and reinstalled, if it was listed - or needed to be listed - at the time.

I wouldn't even open a fixture that old (assuming it was incandescent) because when you do, the insulation will probably turn to dust. My wife was a Library Director. She asked me to replace the ancient incandescent light over the circulation deck. I screwed my courage to the sticking point and told her -- NO. Two weeks later I was at the library on a Sunday and observed another guy staring at the bare wires with the insulation powder all over the circulation desk.

To elaborate on that, I had one where the stair light was troubled in an old victorian. The other guy quoted $55k to repair!
He had to redo the entire house

Just exactly how is wiring installed in a pressurized gas line ? The method I am familiar with would be to use the abandoned gas pipe as a conduit from here to the fixture.

cap it off with a hickey
looks like a whistle

wires come thru the plaster ceiling
junction exposed in the attic

Hey, that was 1920.
Original K&T that was not overloaded, coverd or added to is generally well built.
Theyweren't in a hurry

I was looking for some pictures but you could do it with these.
Doesn't show the whistle type fitting here...
Sometimes the pipe terminates in a box.

I've seen them where the chandelier has been working with both gas and with electric lamps for a long time.

Sad but I bet the AHJ rarely looks at this!
