Replacing 2 wire receptacle with GFCI ?

If there is no gnd wire , why does NEC state that a GFCI be used and not just a standard three prong outlet? If the ground fault function is unable to work due to not being grounded then why spend the extra money on GFCI?

Since you are not asking a "how to" question:
The answer to your question lies in the fact that a GFCI will offer protection on both grounded and ungrounded circuits.
