I have two old bath fans to replace that have an attic above. The attic contains vermiculite insulation which has been known to contain asbestos.

I don't really want the job to begin with but it's part of a bigger job I have been apart of. Would you touch this job before they dealt with the insulation? I might be looking for an easy out but it seems like such a mess unless the vermiculite gets vacuumed out around the fan before the job. Anyone done this before?

If you do and LNI feels like they need to audit the job and the various companies safety programs its a mess.

Now how to do it based on some previous dealings and pretending it doesn't have 1% or more asbestos. Take 2 pieces of cardboard up into the attic and staples them across the joist bay a few inches more than needed for the fan and shovel it out with a dust pan. Then cut and install fan you'll have some stragglers drop down but most of the vermiculite will remain up there instead of the floor.

If vacuuming the insulation out is part of their scope of work, then by all means wait until it's vlear. You might even find repairs need to be made to other wiring, too.

If vacuuming out is not part of their scope, buy a painter's suit, goggles and respirator. $75 is cheap, comparatively

Do you really have to replace the fan housing or can you just replace the motors? You didn't say what the customer is wanting as the end product.
