Plan on upgrading a 100a - 200a service and I can't seem to get a hold of the town official to ask a questions. When upgrading a service do I have to upgrade the home with afci type breakers where needed ? I am not a contractor yet so I don 't know but I have a idea of the answer but do not know. This is my familys home {nj } and I am trying to help out where I can.

Hmmm, good question. In NJ, if you had a bad breaker, you could replace a non-AFCI with another non-AFCI. If you put in a new circuit of the type to require AFCI, you need to put in an AFCI breaker. If you're not adding circuits but only changing the service, I'm not sure. If Rick Napier shows up on this thread he can tell you for sure.
