Required Clearances for service

Is 36" required in "ALL" directions from electrical equipment (600 volts, nominal or less)
or can we have greater than 36" in front and back and only 30" horizontally on the side (i.e right or left side)?

What sort of "electrical equipment" are we talking about here?
4000A switch gear
200A panel in a home
Disconnects
