Required conduit spacing in trench

Per 2008 NEC 310.15(B)(2)(b); "spacing" shall be maintained between multiple conduits.
Is "spacing" required when installing conduits below grade by directional boring? Typically conduits are pulled in a honeycomb grouping.

The spacing is required where connections are made
