Hello,
I am a C10 contractor, California, and looking to hire a fire alarm technician. Under the DIR requirements it states any journeyman fire tech needs to have a California Fire Life Safety cert.

What I don’t understand is most of the job postings I see for fire alarm technicians do not require any certifications, just some experience.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Does a journeyman fire alarm tech need to be certified to work under a C10 contractor? And if so, how do these companies hire techs without being certified?

I appreciate any info you can provide.

Certification is required only for those persons who perform work as electricians for contractors licensed as class C-10 electrical contractors under the Contractors' State License Board Rules and Regulations. Certification is not required for persons performing work for contractors licensed as class C-7 low voltage systems or class C-45 electric sign contractors as long as the work performed is within the scope of the class C-7 or class-45 license, including incidental and supplemental work as defined in Section 7059 of the Business and Professions Code, and regardless of whether the same contractor is also licensed as a class C-10 contractor.

All C-10 Electrical Contractors must hire only Certified Electricians registered with the Department of Industrial Relations. This requires completing the education and experience requirement to qualify to take the examination. It is against the Contractors State License Board for a C-10 Electrical Contractor to hire a non-licensed Electrician.

That makes no sense. You are saying a c-10 cannot hire someone to answer the phone other than licensed electricians.

But fire alarm work requires a C-10. Years ago all C-7 contractors that were doing fire alarm work were required to add C-10 if they wanted to continue doing fire alarm work.

Correct ! ... This is also going on with who should be allowed to install Battery Backup Systems. The Contractors License Board will hold hearings on whether it should be C-46 or C10.

Review, Discussion, and Possible Action by the Board to Initiate the Rulemaking Process Pursuant to the Administrative Procedure Act to Amend California Code of Regulations, Title 16, Sections 810 (Definitions), 831 (Incidental and Supplemental Defined), 832.10 (Class C-10, Electrical Contractor), and 832.46 (Class C-46, Solar Contractor) by Approving the Proposed Text that was Presented to the Board on November 29, 2021

Thanks for the reply’s. So it seems larger companies that are looking for fire techs with multiple years experience and no certification are utilizing the C7 in conjunction with the C10 license, even though legally the tech is not allowed to perform this type of work under a C7?

Correct ! ... The CSLB discovers these problems along with investigating a complaint against a contractor. There is no proactive task force ongoing at this time, except for "Sting" operations.
