Would an outlet be required on a movable kitchen island ? This island has four heavy legs with the same counter top as the rest of the kitchen . It is 48" long and 24" deep . It also has cabinets and drawers .

The NEC does not define ?island.? 210.52(C)(3) does say that if you have an ?island,? and if it meets the minimum size (12 x 24), then it has to have at least one receptacle. But if you don?t have an ?island,? then you don?t have to read 210.52(C)(3). I agree with Ryan and Jeff here: you don?t have an ?island.?

Since you posted this question under "Safety," let me add what you probably already know, and what I surmise led you to ask the question in the first place: There is no safe way to install an outlet, if the item can be easily moved.

I have ran into a few that wanted an island but flat out did not want a receptacle.Solution is simple just dont show it on print and dont have it there on my final. If you screw it down after i leave it is not my problem. If its really portable just how could i wire it ? ;)

How do you control what Joe Homeowner does after the final inspection? That would be no different than selling a car to a friend and then he drives too fast and gets a ticket, is it your fault? :D

You will, I hope, allow me to object to this line of reasoning? We should not endorse any circumvention of the rules. The concept of ?just wait until the inspector is gone? does not fly, in my book. I agree that we cannot control the homeowner, once we hand over the keys and walk away with our check. But we should not use this as a tool for getting around the rules.

I certainly agree with that Charlie. It was not my intent to even suggest that as a normal way of operating and should have been more clear. Thank you for catching that. :D
