Requirement for P.E. seal for an 800amp service

We designed an electrical service that is 800amps 120/208v 3ph 4w. We drafted AutoCad drawings showing this service. The architect has disapproved our drawings stating that a Registered P.E. needs to seal the drawings. I was of the understanding that any service "over" 800amps required an engineers seal. We are located in Virginia. Any code references or help on this matter?

Sealing, in this case, is not an NEC issue; it is up to the State or local regulations.

The requirement for a PE seal should have been included in your contract with the architect. If they want a PE now, then you have a problem on your hands. If a non-licensed person completes a design, and then hands it to a PE who had not been previously involved in the design process, it would be a violation of professional ethics, and perhaps a violation of state law, for the PE to seal the drawings. The PE seal does not certify that, for example, ?I agree that this is a good design, and that it complies with code.? Rather, the PE seal certifies one thing, and one thing only: ?This work was done by me or under my supervision.?

A PE who was not involved in the project can be hired to review the drawings, to write a report that documents any comments or that states his or her agreement with the design, and to seal the report itself. But that will not make it acceptable for the PE to seal the drawings.
