does any one direct bury service feeder conductors to a home, or do you put them in pvc? a home owner wants pvc. 200amp service.

Re: res. service feeders

I have seen it both ways. However you need to check with the POCO, around here we are required to use conduit all the way.

Re: res. service feeders

If this is an actual service lateral, what the homeowner wants is irrelevant, at least in my neck of the woods. If the POCO wants a pvc sleeve (under alleyways, sidewalks, parking areas etc..) then they get one. Beyond that, the POCO does their own trenching for resi. around these parts. Things may be different where you are, but I'd still recommend calling the POCO before agreeing to anything with the homeowner.

Re: res. service feeders

i'll give the poco a call. thanks every one i don't usaully do new construction so this end is pretty new to me.

Yea I know what you mean about doing new work.
I don?t so much new work myself. :D :D
Typed for Mike by someone else.

Re: res. service feeders

If using pvc would you instail a standard service wire 4/0 with 3 wire with ground, or would you just instail 4thhn conductors with a ground? I'm thinking it wouldn't matter. I've worked industrial and light commercial for the past 7 years, so when somone asks for a new service or even a ceiling fan i have to plan it out but its getting alot easier every day. I usually stick with service work not new construction.

Re: res. service feeders

No, I would install 4/0 3-wire URD, pipe or no pipe.

Ahead of the service, bonding is accomplished with the neutral conductor. It is very irregular to pull a "ground" with the service conductors from the utility. There would be two hots and a neutral, that's it. :)

Most of the times I will do a calculation to see what size conductors will be needed instead of just using 4/0, it makes me look more professional.

One of the things I truly enjoy about this site is reading how things work in other areas of the country. Around here, we simply set the meter trough and panel, do the grounding electrodes and walk away. The POCO does their own trenching and runs their own cable. Even if we do have to provide a sleeve, we still, as a rule, don't pull the cable. It would appear that we have it pretty easy around here.

Re: res. service feeders

Heck it changes around here depending on the power co.

Pretty typical for us to run the conduit out to a pole or pad mount transformer than pull the cables. The POCO will make the final connections at their end.

If it is CT metering we run the conduits and mount the equipment than the meter crew will come in and wire it.

Heck, it changes around here depending on which division of the same power company you're dealing with. :D

Loveland power company's residential division digs the trenches and installs the conductors, the commercial division only terminates their end in the vault. ;)

Re: res. service feeders

The home ownder said pvc b.c. he does not no how to instaill a service, or he would do it himself. He told me pvc b.c. the power company showed him a 3"pipe that was buried under the neighbors driveway for future for his lot. I'll do my best to instaill pvc But i don't think he likes my price of $2,718.00 so He might get the direct bury cable but i'm not to sure how much of a cost he would save. Thanks everyone for your replies. The biggest thing is he wants me to trench though the woods about 150 feet to his home.I don't know what i might hit, i hate trenching in areas like that.
