I have a customer that wants a light installed under her post war kitchen hood (say 1950's). I am trying to convice her to change out the whole unit but in case she doesnt go for it would a vapor proof cage light be ok in this situation? I see them under commercial hoods all the time. the hood is probably 25 inches from the top of the gas stove top.

I personally dont even like the idea of putting any light under this hood let along a plastic uc light. And yes i know that there are plastic parts in other hoods but im not an expert on different types of plastics and their thresholds to heat. IMO a metal and glass fixture is probably the best way to go if she really doesnt want replace the whole unit.

give her a two option quote-
one- to replace the hood
two- to install a light under the hood.
I think if you realistically work it out it will be cheaper to replace the hood then it would be to rinky-dink a code worthy light situation by rehashing the exsisting unit.

Have you ever looked at a light in a hood? Ain't much to 'em

There is a code that requires so many inches between the top of stove and an object. Not sure where I found that, but I wanted to put in an above stove micro, but I didn't have the required clearence to do so. This may be a concern if the light you plan to put there pretrudes beyond the venthood.
