Hey everyone,

My in-law purchased a Honeywell ATS to be mounted inside garage, with a Generac generator. We started on the work, and I started to think of the code reference 230.85. Since this is a newer code on a house built to a old standard. Will the fact the ATS is now the main disconnect, screw us on requiring it to be mounted outside the house as a Emergency disconnect. If this is the case I would most likely to save the house siding, have to add a actual disconnect next to the meter then go into the ATS.

Respectfully,

Dave

You may have to add an EPO switch for the generator next to the emergency disconnect. @Dennis Alwon may correct me on this, but I think North Carolina actually requires a disconnect for the generator output mounted next to the emergency disconnect. Don’t know if it’s the same where you’re at.

Signage indicating where the generator and/or disconnect is located works here or It did. I've retired since the 20 was finally adopted.

When people ask these questions without giving details on the existing setup it's hard to give advice. The best course of action depends on what you have existing. Do you have a meter main combo, or a separate meter socket and panel? Is the existing service disconnect inside or outside?
