Is a residential boat house - (for example, a roof over a single boat lift over fresh water on driven piers classed as a wet location or a damp location.
If it is a wet location, does the light fixtures under the roofed section have to be weather proof?
Any electrician or inspector that has had experience in installing and inspecting residential boat houses to code could you please share some information with me as i am finding it hard to find the exact code requirements from section 555 and 553 of the code as it says that single residential owned boat houses aren't covered in these articles, plus the lakes that i work on do not enforce an electrical code. i think installing electrical equipment around water is an area that needs to be wired to code for personel safety.
Any info would be very much appreciated.

The boat house is intended to keep the boat dry. It will also keep the electrical equipment dry if protected adaquately.

Rules for any structure should not be any different with the presence of the water, as in this situation.

In atricle 100 the definition for damp location includes "partially protected locations under canopies" and "roofed open porches, and like locations". As long as it's not subject to "saturation".

I don't see anything under wet location that sounds like it applies at all.

I agree with your concern around water, that's where I'm most concerned too.

Wouldn't you think electrical equipment installed directly over water would be subject to a lot of moisture in the air, such as a boat house, making it a wet location?

Re: residential boat house

It's been raining here around San Francisco most of the time it seems like for the last month. I'd wager that the humidity here has been at least as much as at the lake your talking about.

"Location, Wet. Installations underground or in concrete slabs or masonry in direct contact with the earth; in locations subject to saturation with water or other liquids, such as vehicle washing areas; and in unprotected locations exposed to weather."

I don't see "and around lakes". (I'm just being a wise guy). As long as the last item "locations exposed to weather" doesn't apply I don't see where it's a wet location.

I would cheat... I would visit other boathouses and inspect the wiring and fixtures. See what works and what don't.
