Can anyone point me in the direction of a surface mount LED fixture that is specifically listed for use in the "storage" area of a clothes closet.

This would install in place of the existing keyless that is non compliant due to improper clearance.

Thanks

I would demo the keyless and put in a rescesed light and be done with it

4 closets to do.

Plaster ceiling with wire mesh, old style bracketed boxes with the support arm notched into rafter. Attic headspace less than 18".

Guess I was looking for an easy way.

I believe the Halo SLD6 series is listed for closet storage space areas but not 100% sure. If its an old 3/0 box it might be a challenge to install unless you make/use some kind of extension.

Their web page says "compliant with NEC . . . 410.16 (C)(5)" so that's correct.

Edit: They also make a spacer extension ring SLD6EXT if you need more space in the box. And everything is available in a nominal 4" version as well, SLD4.

Cheers, Wayne

If the light is listed for in the storage area then you don't have to worry--410.16 is the section as mentioned above

Any light with a covered lense is usually sufficient.
There can be no exposed bulb.
If it’s an incandescent it has to be 12” away from the shelf.
If it’s led or fluorescent it can be 6” away from a shelf.

Not totally correct. There are LED's that are made to be installed in the closet storage area. There is no distance for those to be away from anything. For instance, this is an led closet rod for your clothes

In the storage space means in the area that is normally restricted from lighting.

410.16(B)(5)Surface-mounted fluorescent or LED luminaires shall be
permitted to be installed within the closet storage space
where identified for this use.

Palster and lath with the mesh is definitely a pain in the a**, otherwise I always try to put in a recessed led ,

I found this product at a hardware store. Pretty interesting. It just screws onto/into a keyless porcelain and converts it into a low profile LED fixture. Don't even have to remove the keyless porcelain.

I installed it in a closet when visiting a friend last fall that needed an upgrade in her closet, I didn't have any tools with me so this worked well for the situation.

Very cool product, I will have to remember that. Also saves the hassle of dealing with old wire in boxes that is not rated 90*C or lacks an EGC.

OP, those old ceiling boxes that are mounted by notching the bottom edge of the ceiling joist are a real bear to get out... That is some seriously thick steel... that combined with the plaster and lathe, I would definitely avoid trying to tear that out.

Costco was selling one recently just like that for like 11.99 color temp change and all. Not sure how much this one is.

Nice, I regularly haunt that aisle at Costco. This one from Home Depot is 19.97; an issue is that it is never seems in stock (the have smaller version of it that is square, instead of round, that is usually available)
