Residential elevator

I have been handed a set of plans to bid that is for a 2 story duplex. Garage/storage/laundry on ground floor, living quarters on 2nd floor. The plans show an elevator serving one side of the duplex. These plans come from a drafting service, not an architect, and therefore absolutely no engineering or forethought has been added to the blueprints other than showing a square room and labeled elevator. I have never even seen an elevator in a residence before except on "Miami Vice" tv show. Anybody know much about a residential elevator? Are they hydraulic run or scissor lift? This house is slab on grade, so is there going to be a pit? any insights would be most helpful. Thanks in advance.

Re: Residential elevator

I'm out of my depth, but are you sure they want you to bid anything in regards to the elevator? Sounds like a typical "have xxx amps available here, and leave the rest to us" type scenario.

If you're sure, my company did a house with an elevator recently, I can ask the guy who wired it some questions. He had no hands on the elevator itself, though. :(

Re: Residential elevator

Hi George, actually I sent a bid across today with that Item excluded. Like you said, if they want xxx amps delivered, then no problem, but I am sure not including for a mystery box. I have wired buildings with elevators before, but they were high rise with a machine room at the roof, and the whole nine yards. This one goes up one floor. I am thinking it must be something like a car lift in a tire store, but like I said I have never seen one in a house myself. One thing I do know is there is no differentiation in the code in regards to whether an elevator is in a house or a high rise. Certain codes must be met. So they can get a price from me when I am provided with enough info from them on what is actually required. Until then , curiosity is what compelled me to ask my original questions.

Re: Residential elevator

I have just done one recently and would be glad to answer any specific questions you have. The one i did was a 1ph. 240v with a hydraulic pump. Everything was enclosed in a mechanical room. Like stated before it was just a instance where we get XX amps to the motor and the LV Elevator company takes care of all the circuit board work, mobile cable, and etc. Ill see if i can get some pics posted.
