I'm going to be providing the wiring for a residential elevator. This includes running a 30 amp circuit to a 3 phase disconnect and a 20 amp 120v circuit to a 1 phase disconnect (elevator tech says they also disconnect the neutrals?) in the elevator equipment room. I also need to provide a GFI receptacle and a guard protected light. Has anyone ever heard an additional rule that this room cannot contain any other equipment? I ask this because the builder has designed this house with the 400amp service in the elevator room and I'm thinking that he may have to do some redesigning.

That is a problem, check out 620.37.

That is interesting, I did a house with a elevator, and the elevator equipment was tucked underneath the stairs but it was basically in the same room as all the electrical panels... so if you can define machine room, control room, machinery spaces and control spaces I can tell if its a violation or not...

Edit, I'm assuming if I can look at the panels and the elevator gear than I'm in violation?

The elevator room is also required to have a lockable door, so if the elevator equipment and the panels are within the room together without a lockable door between it would seem to be a violation, under the stairs or not.

So what if the basement is unfinished? I'm assuming then you would need to finish off a room just for any equipment related to the elevator?

The definitions are in 620.2
