I need to install a 2Hp pump in a residential home for fire sprinkler system. I plan on serving it with a 240V single phase (motor is dual rated for 115V or 230V) circuit with a 25A/2pole breaker. I plan on installing a 30A rated fusible disconnect switch for service disconnect and overload protection (breaker used as short circuit protection).

Questions:
1. Can I run NM cable to the disconnect or should I use emt to disconnect? The motor is located in a non-finished area.

2. Does anyone know typically how the motor will be controlled?

3. If anyone has any good installation practices for this applicaiton I would appreciate your input.

Thank you.

First find out what it is. By that I mean is it really a "fire pump"? I doubt it. It is more likely a jockey pump or pressure maintenance pump. The latter are just motors and are wired accordingly. It may come with a label that says "fire pump" and the controller may say "fire pump controller" but it is the end use that determines what it is in terms of Code requirements.

Your local inspection authority for the sprinkler system should be able to clarify what type of pump it is.

Check the code under fire pumps there are special rules for true fire pumps such as they shall be fused so as to carry the locked rotor current of the pump indefintiely.also the feed for the pump must be before the main disconnect and must be run outside the building or be encased in 2" of concrete. this is for commercial I don't beleive there is a code for resi.
