Where is it in the NEC that circuits for residential garage receptacles shall not extend beyond the garage? I am biding s residence that has a carport - - would this same requirement apply? I am thinking yes, although the code says garage?

The carport will be completely open on 2 areas. A wall @ back (with a passage way leading out) & exterior of house wall to another side. The 3 receptacle shown on the plan will be GFCI protected with in-use covers on them.

The back wall is adjacent to a storage area/room that will have 8 GFCI protected receptacles in it. I just don't like the thought of having the 3 receptacle on a separate circuit, unless code says so.

210.52(G)(1)
In each attatched garage and in each detattched garage with electric power. The branch circuit supplying the receptacles(s) shall not supply outlets outside of the garage. At least one receptacle outlet shall be installed for each car space.

I've never heard of such a requirement.
Is this something new?
Yup.
2014 NEC
210.52(G) Basements, Garages, and Accessory Buildings.
For a one-family dwelling, at least one receptacle outlet shall be installed in the following specified areas. These receptacles shall be in addition to receptacles required for specific equipment.

(1) Garages. In each attached garage and in each detached garage with electric power. The branch circuit supplying this receptacle(s) shall not supply outlets outside of the garage. At least one receptacle shall be installed for each car space.

I agree-- a carport is not a garage however it is no telling what an authority having jurisdiction would say. IMO, I would probably treat it as a garage in case it is ever closed in.

Garage. A building or portion of a building in which one or more self propelled vehicles can be kept - - -

So I guees that I answered my own question. A carport, & a garage could be considered the same thing! :slaphead:

Garage - A building or portion of a building..... I think we then need to understand what a building is. I agree that you never know what the AHJ will do but that is true with anything.

can I use that same circuit for lighting and garage door opener?
