Residential Generator with Automatic Transfer switch.

What conditions help decide whether or not to switch the neutral for a residential generator with an automatic transfer switch?

I would think: need and expense.
There is no need to switch the neutral on residential installs and a 3 pole transfer switch is more expensive.

Same as commercial generator, there is no reason to switch the neutral unless there is ground fault protection at the generator or at the building.

Agree. Switching the neutral also requires grounding electrode systems at both sources, rather than maintaining the existing one.
