I've been hunting for code guidance on whether I can run a 20A 12/2WG line to a 5 gang light switch box and branch to a variety of lighting circuits in a large dining/living room with 14/2WG. None of the 5 circuits is more than 600 watts. The max wattage for the combined 14/2 runs is 1850 watts drawing on the 12/2WG feeder.

A buddy of mine said I have to feed with 14/2 to the box if I run 14/2 from the box to the light circuits and thus have to use a second 14/2 feeder to accommodate the wattage of the planned lights.

Anyone have a quick answer for me?

Regarding DIYer posts:
1. What else are they not asking?
2. Will a permit and inspection be done?
3. Every electrician has horror stories of DIY electrical, of course this unsafe and dangerous work keeps a lot of electricians in business.

With that, I'll close this post.
